DETROIT - The City of Detroit is getting a nice bonus in its Christmas stocking as city leaders just announced a big $105 million budget surplus for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 2025. That total is nearly double the $60M budget surplus originally projected, according to the city’s chief financial officer, Tanya Stoudemire.
In what is scheduled to be his last press conference, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan will discuss the city's budget surplus Tuesday afternoon.
Mary Sheffield's swearing-in ceremony is open to the public and will also see other city leaders sworn into office. It will feature various performances.

The Detroit Lions are sending five players to the 2026 Pro Bowl Games. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell are joined by edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and linebacker Jack Campbell as 2026 Pro Bowlers. Gibbs, Campbell, Hutchinson and Sewell were named starters.
