The beak of some birds may appear shiny and to draw that effect there is a balance between contrast and blending. Here, I needed to get the highlights bright and shadows dark to make the beak look shiny and increase the depth, shape and form. But the softening and blending of layers helped to bring the layers together to create a smoother, shiny looking surface.
